"Mardi Gras of Meat" Partners with Capitol Federal Park @ Sandstone Amphitheater for 5th Anniversary

Bonner Springs, Kansas (February, 2009) – The Great American Barbecue Festival is announcing it's new location, to be held at The Wyandotte County Park at Capitol Federal Park @ Sandstone in Bonner Springs, KS. As part of its long term strategy, the Barbecue Festival organizers have been looking for a new home to satisfy growth predictions based on expanded interest in competitive BBQ, and the need for a family friendly Memorial Day event for the Kansas City metro.
The Unified Government's Parks & Recreation Department Director, Gary Salva, who initiated negotiations for the event, says that this is an "incredible partnership", and is a "natural fit". Salva continues that "KC area families will be reintroduced and pleasantly surprised with the facilities at Wyandotte County Park".
Great American BBQ Executive Director, Tracy Satterfield shares that "We are excited to have a natural festival venue with so many world class amenities to grow into. With over 40 acres of festival grounds and parking, we are positioned for growth",
Kansas City Barbecue Society Executive Director, Carolyn Wells says "The Great American has grown into one of Kansas City's signature events. As one of the major players in competitive BBQ, we are excited to see the Great American's new partnership. Wyandotte County Park is a beautiful venue, and this will be a fantastic opportunity to show them both off".
The Unified Government and the Great American inked their preliminary agreement to host the BBQ festival on Memorial Day weekend, May 22nd through May 24th.
The Great American's fifth year anniversary expects to have 275 cooking teams vying for $73,000 in prize money. Other activities for the 50,000 expected attendees will include 18 hours of live music, the Fox 4 KidZone, Carnival, barbecue sauce sampling and judging, barbecue vendors from across the country, cooking seminars, competitive eating contests, and a host of family friendly events.
