DARE Festival 2009

Capitol Federal Park @ Sandstone hosted the annual DARE Festival on May 14, 2009. Celebrating the accomplishments of 3000 students, the house was rocking with enthusiasm. Students from two states, 50 plus schools and 10 counties filled the amphitheater to enjoy music, bands and entertaining speakers.

Starting the festival with the Pledge of Allegiance, students stood proud as they placed their hand across their heart. Visiting speakers included several local police officials and state officials congratulating the students on their success in completing the DARE program. Retro Bill however was the star of the show. With his wacky looks and entertaining style, Retro Bill kept the kids attention throughout the day, introducing other performers and reminding the kids how important it is to say no to drugs and alcohol.

Supporting local talent, several police officials formed a cover band and had the kids off their feet rushing to the stage. The young band Clever by Accident also performed and became local celebrities in 15 minutes, signing autographs for a long time after their set. Also joining the list was country performer Christy Crook, dancing group Power and Life, Disney's Jordan Pruitt and rapper Alan Bradley. Every artist brought something to the days success; words of wisdom, talented lyrics and energy.

All students were very helpful in placing trash in its respective places and also helped the staff of Cap Fed Park continue our green initiatives and chose to place their plastic bottles and soda cans in the recycle bin instead of the trash can. When I asked one Bonner Springs student if he was having fun, he told me this was the best day ever. We hope the students will join us again next year for another successful DARE Festival.

Earth Day

The Capital Federal Park at Sandstone and dozens of other sponsors
teamed up with Bridging The Gap at their 13th Annual Earth Walk /
Earth Fest in Kansas City's scenic Theis Park on May 9th, 2009.

Earth Day in America is a celebration of the achievements of the
environmental movement's 30 years and the challenges that remain:
Black smoke may no longer pour from city stacks, nor sludge foul our
riversides, but less visible forces such as climate change and
population growth still mark the distance between present-day America
and a sustainable society.

It is that very reason for which Bridging the Gap demonstrates how
such a growing global problem can be simplified by solutions
implemented on a individual level. Suitably, the focus of this year's
festival was five specific actions that everyone in Kansas City can do
to reduce CO2 emissions and clean up our community:

1) Give up bottled water
2) Wash your laundry in cold water
3) Switch to compact fluorescent light bulbs
4) Set your thermostat to 68 degrees in winter; 78 degrees in summer
5) Cut your gasoline use by one quarter

Making these changes will reduce a household's emissions by at least
4,000 pounds, that's over 15 percent! As if that wasn't motivation
enough, participants at this year's Earth Fest had a chance to win
free tickets to upcoming concerts throughout the metro area by
reciting a pledge of dedication to these five green things. The
Capital Federal Park at Sandstone thanks local promoters and partners,
Mammoth Live and Up To Eleven, for their generous support and the free
ticket giveaways!

Joined by a new accumulation of knowledge and tools of change, there
was a ubiquitous sense of community amongst attendees; the comradeship
was palpable. In the end, proving that Kansas City truly is a socially
and environmentally responsible community that encourages coming
together to work towards common goals to benefit the planet.

The achievements of both the Capital Federal Park at Sandstone's Green
Initiatives and Bridging the Gap's Earth Walk / Earth Fest demonstrate
that global climate change can be supplemented by meaningful
improvements in education and technology. We strongly believe that
the environmentalist majority has a fighting chance at success!

"Mardi Gras of Meat" Partners with Capitol Federal Park @ Sandstone Amphitheater for 5th Anniversary

Bonner Springs, Kansas (February, 2009) – The Great American Barbecue Festival is announcing it's new location, to be held at The Wyandotte County Park at Capitol Federal Park @ Sandstone in Bonner Springs, KS. As part of its long term strategy, the Barbecue Festival organizers have been looking for a new home to satisfy growth predictions based on expanded interest in competitive BBQ, and the need for a family friendly Memorial Day event for the Kansas City metro.

The Unified Government's Parks & Recreation Department Director, Gary Salva, who initiated negotiations for the event, says that this is an "incredible partnership", and is a "natural fit". Salva continues that "KC area families will be reintroduced and pleasantly surprised with the facilities at Wyandotte County Park".

Great American BBQ Executive Director, Tracy Satterfield shares that "We are excited to have a natural festival venue with so many world class amenities to grow into. With over 40 acres of festival grounds and parking, we are positioned for growth",

Kansas City Barbecue Society Executive Director, Carolyn Wells says "The Great American has grown into one of Kansas City's signature events. As one of the major players in competitive BBQ, we are excited to see the Great American's new partnership. Wyandotte County Park is a beautiful venue, and this will be a fantastic opportunity to show them both off".

The Unified Government and the Great American inked their preliminary agreement to host the BBQ festival on Memorial Day weekend, May 22nd through May 24th.

The Great American's fifth year anniversary expects to have 275 cooking teams vying for $73,000 in prize money. Other activities for the 50,000 expected attendees will include 18 hours of live music, the Fox 4 KidZone, Carnival, barbecue sauce sampling and judging, barbecue vendors from across the country, cooking seminars, competitive eating contests, and a host of family friendly events.

The Unified Government's Parks & Recreation Department and the Great American BBQ Festival will make a formal announcement regarding their partnership and long term vision, on Wednesday February 25th at 5:00 PM at Capitol Federal Park @ Sandstone in front of the Mainstage. BBQ and beverages will available to all media members.

Cap Fed Park Nationally Honored

When fans walk into Capitol Federal Park @ Sandstone they are already part of a green movement just by attending a concert. Sandstone's vision is to create a place where the fan is at the center of an improved social, recreational and environmental space. In 2008, Sandstone was selected for the Best of Bonner Springs Award in the Stadiums Arenas & Athletic Fields category by the U.S. Local Business Association (USLBA), because of the positive image of small business through service to their customers and community.

USLBA is a Washington D.C. based organization funded by local businesses operating in towns, large and small, across America. USLBA's mission is to be an advocate for small and medium size businesses and business entrepreneurs across America.

Capitol Federal Park @ Sandstone takes pride in their many initiatives to make positive changes for our community and environment.

With the support of local businesses, the green team and the fans, our Green Initiatives were successful in 2008 and will continue for many seasons to come.

The New “Up Close and Personal” General Admission Section

Sandstone GACapitol Federal Park at Sandstone developed a new view on the fan experience with their new "up close and personal" general admission section. Eighteen rows of the previous seating area has been removed to allow for fans to receive a festival atmosphere experience. The fan that would typically purchase a lawn ticket will now have a chance to enjoy the show from the once precious front row seats. Ten rows of seats remain in the lower GA section. These are on a first come, first serve basis.

On some shows the lower GA section will be regulated by wristbands for the first 5,000 patrons to arrive at the lower section, but this is on a show by show basis. We do not encourage nor allow camping at the venue gates or surrounding streets. For those interested in the blanket on the lawn atmosphere, this is still available and is purchased as a general admission ticket as well.

We believe that this change is a positive one. It opens the flow of the park and allows for the laid back atmosphere we hope to achieve.
